Abstract

Estrogen has been proposed as an important etiologic factory in the pathogenesis of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) in man. In this study , an immunocytochemical method involving the monoclonal antibody ER-D5 reactive with the cytosol estrogen
receptor (ER) was used to investigate prostatic tissues. Estrogen receptor was present in 11 of 25 BPH specimens, and in 5 specimens that were amenable to composition analysis, ER was present in both the epithelial and specimens that were
amenable
to
composition analysis, ER was present in both the epithelial and stromal components. Estrogen receptor was also found in normal prostate (1 of 1) and prostatic carcinoma(2 of 2). The finding of ER in human BPH supports the proposal that
circulating
estrogen has a role in the pathogenesis of this disorder.
